Tips for Picking up Right Subjects in High School

Pursuing your dream job will always remain a dream unless you are wise enough to pursue  your studies in a stream that best suits your interests, passions and skills.

With the academic choices being plentiful, choosing the right degree or program can prove a daunting task. Apparently when the choices are too many, we simply don’t get enough time to research or explore each of them, leading to confusion and ultimately towards the wrong career path.

Choosing the wrong subject stream could negatively impact your life and career. You thought you had made the right career choices until one day you wake up only to realize that you were on the wrong track all along. Though financial stability and job security are important aspects while considering a job, it is equally important to pursue a career which meets your interests and skills. Hence, it is utterly important to choose a subject that best matches your inner “elements” and what drives you the most – your passions, interests and skills.

Now here are some tips that can help you in choosing the right subjects.

Be introspective - Connecting with your true inner self is the first and foremost step to discovering more about your interests, hidden talents and potential. To help you make the right decision, here are a few simple questions that you need to ask yourself – What are your passions and interests in life? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What do you want to do with your life? What kind of work will make you happy? Why should I choose this major over the rest? What are the employment opportunities for this major and how does it suit my career interests? Do I have a clear understanding of this subject?

Discover and Research– Identify your possible strengths and weaknesses and then pinpoint the Majors you think would best suit your career plans. Do a thorough research on the internet or read related books/course catalogues in order to gather as much information as possible on them. Seek assistance from your teachers, seniors and friends who have got relevant experience or knowledge in similar lines to get a clear picture.  Attend seminars and workshops conducted on career choices to get a better understanding and overview of the stream you are interested in.

Explore, explore and explore -Firstly before any subject is chosen and fixed, it is important to explore everything in the market. The market here being the courses available in the university that a student might find interesting and matches the abilities.

Choosing the right college mattersIt is important to pursue studies in a college that is both prestigious and offers quality education. Don’t just go by the brand name alone; it’s not necessary that all the branded colleges have got good teaching faculties in all the departments. Hence, do an extensive research on the top colleges and finally go for the one that offers the best specialization program in your respective stream. It is important to note that sometimes you may not qualify for the top colleges still you can make the best of college years and reach the top.

Do not feel pressurized -Many parents pressurize their children to take up subjects that will give them (under the pretext) of secure careers such as- doctor/lawyer/scientist/engineer. If, the child has no interest in any of these areas then this is counter-productive.
