The New Normal

Hello and welcome to yet another blog! Anyway, you’ve read the title of this blog, ‘The New Normal’. Coronavirus has brought yet another wave, and it is going on for over a year now. Now you’ll be like, “But what has that got to do with the new normal?” Well, let’s see…

So, what is the meaning of the new normal? As I said, the virus is in our lives for a year. So in this past, difficult year, what are the things that have become normal for us? Have you ever wondered? Got my point? No? Well, let me explain. Since all this mess started, we have not been able to do some things we considered to be normal in our lives. Now we have adapted and do things which are the NEW NORMAL. We had a problem, but some people got used to this and used this situation as inspiration for new ideas. With these new ideas, we got our essentials and food, and that is how technology also helped us through this pandemic. That is the new normal am talking about. Not to worry, I’ll surely explain more. Now let’s see all these changes that have become ‘normal’ for us.

Online Shopping: Lockdown caused all shops to be closed. This was a real problem since all food essentials and stuff was not available. But then, this caused new businesses and soon we began to order things online with the help of new apps (mentioning no names) and this helped us a lot. One of the problems was haircuts, (no, I am serious!!) but soon that was not a problem either. There is a company that gives haircuts now, complete with sanitization facilities. I, on the other hand, bought a trimmer (no one is touching my hair in this pandemic). So this is how it has become normal for us to sit at our homes while things are delivered to us, even our haircuts!

Online classes and meetings: Of course, that also meant that all schools and offices were closed. And once again, technology comes to our aid by providing us apps for our meetings. School and office meetings were also held through these apps on computers, phones, etc. This has also become normal now and it has also become normal though our screen time is increasing at an alarming rate. Now, everything is being held online, including all the celebrations and festivals. Even events like gatherings are also being held online. It can sometimes be a hassle as network problems are common here. But, we have adapted to this new way so naturally.

Money matters: So many people have lost their jobs because of the pandemic, and those who still have them are getting no salaries. This is another problem, as they have to pay taxes, school fees, and they too need provisions, and did I mention prices are double when you buy online? This is still a problem, even in 2021. Schools are favoring these people by reducing fees, but it is still not enough. People who do have money, also need to pay their taxes online, and banking is also done through the same process. Thus, these money matters have also become the new normal. There is less handling of cash and more of plastic money and online transactions.

Pollution is less: As people don’t go to offices and children don’t go to schools, vehicles are not used much and manufacturing factories were also not working. You know what that means, don’t you? Less pollution time! Woo-Hoo! As you might know, all animals are not fond of pollution (no one is). Before pandemic, the animals were scarcely visible even in forests. Even sea creatures were not seen in the seas, but after pandemic, all social media sites were buzzing with videos of herds of deer and other animals running across the road. There were also sightings of whales and dolphins in seas. See what I mean? Pollution has become less now. People have stopped taking their cars for long drives just for fun. It is the new normal, of course. And I also heard petrol is expensive now. I sometimes wonder if God sent the Virus to teach the human race a nice, lifelong remembering lesson.

Sanitation practices: Most important one and worth mentioning are sanitation practices. They have become common now. For example, we always wear a mask before going outside, we carry a sanitizer with us, we don’t touch our mouth, we don’t come in contact with people and we also wash our goods when they come home (and maybe not touch those for a day or two). Some people overdo these things, like using a sanitizer every 30 minutes, washing hands every 5 minutes and even wearing a mask inside their houses (probably not, but anyway). Some people also don’t follow it, as though they are not afraid of the Corona, but they come to their senses when they’ve had it.

Fitness: OK, think about this one. Before the pandemic, people had maids to do all their work, right? But the maids stopped coming, so people had no choice but to do their work themselves. And some people work out at home rather than going to the gym. Thus, this made them fit in a way and also understood what trouble their maid had to undergo. So this has also become the new normal and has also awakened people from their laziness.

Eating Habits: Before pandemic, people did not cook themselves. They went to restaurants daily. But of course the restaurants closed down after pandemic, and anyway, who would go in a restaurant in the pandemic? So people cooked at their homes instead of going out to eat pizzas and burgers and that kind of crap. This also helped people to learn to cook and also try making new dishes.

So these were some of the major changes that took place in our lives after the Coronavirus. Normally we wouldn’t have given it a second thought because we were so used to taking life for granted. We adapted to a lot of changes in lots of our normal ways to make it THE NEW NORMAL WAYS. Please do share this blog if you like it, and I’ll meet you in the next blog!
