Dr Praksh Moghe is an education evangelist, passionate and working towards teachers skills development initiative with a motto “Earn With Pride”

"Destiny of India is being shaped in the classroom was how the First Education Planning Commission began its report. Today, we are watching the change happening in the classroom, in the ground, out of the school walls, in the internet, but the common denominator, assumption, for all to be successful is still an effective classroom teacher...."

Eminent writer Alvin Toffler is the author of the influential book trio Future Shock, Third Wave and Power Shift, that have influenced entire mankind since1970s. The entire field of Futurology as a science is the outcome of Toffler’s ceaseless efforts.

Today I would like to visit one of the most famous quotes by Toffler as applicable to the teaching professionals.

"To learn, unlearn and relearn will be the survival skills in the Information Wave society in independent India. We, teachers have also to unlearn some skills we love to clinch knowingly or unknowingly."

When we look around us, among our own past and present friends or read of others’ professional success, we invariably find them from being good to too good at learning new skills, unlearning the wrong habits and relearning the new, more acceptable habits. While all may not be good at all the three, knowingly or unknowingly, the more successful are good at one or more of the three skills.

One of my professional friends, Mr. Mahendra Ingle, who was a corporate trainer at Hero Academy took many teacher training sessions to explore the possibilities of transferring their skills to the industry training.  School teachers’ patience, going an extra mile to help the students attracted him a lot. He tried very hard to get mainstream teachers into corporate training. This one field teachers can explore.

Is not it surprising that many teachers use sites like www. teacherspayteachers.com to better their work, but few even think to get their works listed and make money out of it or even do it just for pleasure. I have read of a lady teacher earning $ 100,000 on that site publishing just primary school level content.

We, teachers have also to unlearn some skills we love to clinch knowingly or unknowingly.  Procrastination being the most silent killer in the community. Many times we feel and are even convinced that we can easily do that, but some other day … this habit of doing some other day is to be changed. Another thing we need to unlearn is our attitude towards talking about, handling money matters. We, the teachers, talk / think of money in two extremes - either keep cribbing over how the ‘management’ we work for or someone else is earning using our talents or we are indifferent to the opportunities lying in front of us and continue to be mediocre. We need to learn how to Earn With Pride.

We, the teachers, also need to revisit or relearn the importance of our contribution to the growth and development of the organisation we work for. We need to relearn how to be assertive as against being negligent, pushing or begging for our rights. We need to relearn using our smartphone, social media skills, the perspective of our professional growth and development.

Destiny of India is being shaped in the classroom was how the First Education Planning Commission began its report. Today, we are watching the change happening in the classroom, in the ground, out of the school walls, in the internet, but the common denominator, assumption, for all to be successful is still an effective classroom teacher....
