RiseUp4SDGs Episode 4 - Quality Education

Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) is the education goal. It aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” - sdg4education2030.org

RiseUp4SDGs' episode 4 is not just closest to the heart for all the participants and educators of International Collaborative Project -2021. Our world is facing serious challenges with millions of children under fire, unsettled and unschooled due to conflict in the age of technological revolution.

Governments globally are failing to meet the access to quality education and lack funding for the poorest citizens worldwide. Education advocates have a responsibility to promote policies that integrate schools, communities, and nations into a system that supports the development of the whole child, ensuring that each student is healthy, safe, engaged, and supported.

The wide digital gap in education came as a stark reality for all of us when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. According to report by UNICEF and International Telecommuncation Union (ITU) two-thirds of world school age children or 1.3 billion aged 3 to 17 years old do not have internet connection in their home, so they were out of school.

The event started with much enthusiasm for all educators who are connected deeply with Sustainable Development Goal No 4. The goal no 4 Quality Education -brought several intriguing issues, a healthy dose of realism shared in the school stories and ample opportunities to apply as the best practices.

The event was opened by the cheerful voice of Paramjeet Kaur Dhillon, Kamla Nehru Public School, India. The panel discussion was then very well moderated by Md Mohiuddin Presidency International School Chattogram, Bangladesh.

The quality education echoed by all in one voice, along with many other challenges and workable solutions. The keynote speaker - Mentor Kovaçi Qamil Metalia Krume Has, Albania focused on quality, inequality in access to education and the vital role of government policies. He said, “Quality Education is not merely access to education, it is a grand step in ensuring that all children, and not just those from high income countries, have a quality education.” He also highlighted the three key pillars that support quality education: ensuring access to quality teachers; providing use of quality learning tools and professional development; and the establishment of safe and supportive quality learning environments.

Building Resilience, the SDG story of Kamla Nehru Public School, impressed the audience as they gave rousing virtual applauds. This was a great discussion which drew attention on a school that integrated technology and SDGs in everyday learning, coming from rural area catering to 65  villages and first generation learners, clearly setting an example. The credit goes to the leader of the school Paramjeet Kaur Dhillon, who adorns a winning streak in her hat along with the strong support from teachers, parents and students of the Kamla Nehru Public School, India.

The teaching staff of the school is fully tech savvy having knowledge and certifications from the popular tools to facilitate online learning. Building resilience for remote learning was all about flexible, friendly and extended evaluation as explained by Ms. Dhillon.

The school actively engages in teachers, parents and students in remote learning wellbeing meetings. Various events conducted and accolades continued virtually during the tumultuous year that was 2020. As a closing remark Ms Dhillon announced yet another impactful program WE RiseUp4SDGs Team’s virtual school for children in remote areas who missed an academic year.  She made an appeal to volunteer for remote teamwork.
